obama-hope-originalSpeaking of copyright law and fair use. The Associated Press is suing Shepard Fairey over his use of an AP photo as the basis for his iconic “Hope” poster.

While the Obama campaign never officially used the Fairey image it was ubiquitous throughout the campaign, appearing on posters, t-shirts, buttons and even spawned an online widget that allowed people to upload their own image and have it transformed to resemble the Fairey poster (Obamicon.Me).

A little over 20 years ago Fairey created the Andre the Giant has a Posse street campaign, a widespead, albeit enigmatic element of pop culture throughout the 1990s.
