SPECIAL LIBRARIES ASSOCIATION USF STUDENT CHAPTER
The name of this group shall be Special Libraries Association University of South Florida Student Chapter (SLA). The SLA USF Student Chapter is an affiliate of the national Special Libraries Association.
- To facilitate and encourage participation in the Special Libraries Association.
- To increase awareness and use of the resources of the Special Libraries Association, including publications, promotional materials, scholarships, and conferences.
- To provide a local forum for the focus and exchange of ideas and information about trends, issues and opportunities in the profession.
- To develop skills and relationships that will enable students to have a creative impact on the profession.
- To promote and support involvement in professional activities.
- To increase awareness of national issues in library and information studies.
100% of active membership must be USF students. Associate membership may be granted to non-students (e.g., non-degree seeking students, USF alumni) under special circumstances. These associate members shall not be given the rights and privileges of active USF students.
IV. DUTIES OF THE SPECIAL LIBRARIES ASSOCIATION STUDENT CHAPTER
The duties of the Special Libraries Association Student Chapter shall include but are not limited to the following:
1. Attending University functions to promote the University.
2. Attending community functions to promote the University.
3. To work with the School of Library and Information Science and the College of Arts and Sciences to support SLIS and CAS student recruitment, retention, and financial support.
The outcome of a vote shall be determined by a majority of members attending a meeting, physically or virtually.
PRESIDENT: The President’s duties shall be to preside over meetings, appoint and oversee organizational functions, and to act as the primary University and College of Arts and Sciences liaison.
VICE PRESIDENT: The Vice President shall assist the President with her/his duties, preside over the organization in the President’s absence, and act as the primary School of Library and Information Science liaison.
TREASURER: The Treasurer shall receive, dispatch, submit, and keep accurate records of all financial matters regarding the Special Libraries Association Student Chapter.
SECRETARY: The Secretary shall record, keep, and make available copies of the meeting minutes, and dispatch correspondence related to the student organization.
WEBMASTER: The Webmaster shall create and maintain as necessary the SLA student chapter Web site and online organizational community.
ARCHIVIST: The Archivist shall document the events and activities of the Special Libraries Association Student Chapter and preserve and organize existing historical documents and information regarding the history of the organization as related to the student chapter.
VII. OFFICER REMOVAL CLAUSE
If any officer fails to uphold her/his post, he/she shall be removed from office by a vote determined by a two-thirds (2/3) majority of members attending a regular student chapter meeting physically or virtually.
The Special Libraries Association Student Chapter will meet monthly during USF academic terms.
IX. RULES OF ORDER
Meetings shall be run according to Robert’s Rules of Order.
X. ANTI-HAZING CLAUSE
The Special Libraries Association Student Chapter expressly prohibits its members, both individually and collectively from committing any acts of hazing as defined herein:
Hazing means any action or situation that recklessly or intentionally endangers the mental or physical health or safety of a student for the purpose of initiation or admission into or affiliation with this organization. Such term shall include, but not be limited to, any brutality of a physical nature, such as whipping, beating, branding, forced calisthenics, excessive exposure to the elements, forced consumption of any food, liquor, drug, or other forced activity that adversely affect the mental health or dignity of the individual to extreme mental stress, such as sleep deprivation, forced exclusion from social contact, forced conduct which could result in extreme embarrassment, or any other forced activity which could adversely affect the mental health or dignity of the individual. For the purpose of this section, any activity as described above upon which the initiation or admission into or affiliation with this organization is directly or indirectly conditioned shall be presumed to be a forced activity, the willingness of an individual to participate in such activity notwithstanding.
XI. AMENDMENT/BY-LAW CHANGES
The Special Libraries Association Student Chapter shall operate in accordance with all University, Student Government, Student Activities and Student Organization Advisory Board provisions. Any amendment or by-law changes regarding the Special Libraries Association Student Chapter shall be passed by a majority vote as defined above, and will be considered pending until presented to and reviewed by Student Activities.
XII. ORGANIZATION AGREEMENT
The Special Libraries Association Student Chapter agrees to abide by FL State Statute #240.262 regarding hazing. Furthermore, the organization agrees to abide by all Student Activities’ policies as outlined in the Student Handbook, to check the organization’s mailbox regularly, to communicate via e-mail upon request, and to update the organization’s records (Officer Listings Form) whenever there is a change in organizational leadership.
